Provencal Caprice
Provencal Caprice, Helen is the capricious maid in this lavoir scene from French Provence.
Caprice is usually accepted as an action or attitude taken at whim
without apparent motive, but the Oxford English Dictionary
relates the source of the word to capra the goat –
hardly a flattering comparison for these young ladies.
The beautiful warm climate of Provence with mountains in the background is an ideal location for Sir William’s paintings.
