Unwelcome Observers
Unwelcome Observers, Haugty, “Spanish” ladies seem here to be looking down on the hard-working peasant girls working at the lavoir. The latter’s resentment is emphasised by the title “Unwelcome INTRUDERS”
given to the unsigned print state, a title which causes some confusion when erroneously applied to the signed edition.
The location, in spite o the Spanish effect, is as one might expect, in the south of France at Uzes and is based on the medieval arches around the Place aux Herbes where he painted in June 1949.
At Uzes, known to the Romans as UCETIA, lie the springs which were the source of the water transported over 50km to Nimes via Pont du Gard.
