Casual Assembly – “A gale had uprooted a noble beech. The prostrate giant bridged a moat and flattend a fence. A pleasant domain was revealed and into it I trespassed. Later, when painting, I was challenged and ordered to withdraw. My name was taken.
I was however, allowed two hours grace but in less than half that time the Agent returned – with his hat in his hand! The owner had several of my pictures and wished to make me welcome. The scene was Pains Hill one of Capability Brown’s masterpieces, the year 1942.”
