Roxanne by the Ardeche, the model in this painting is Cecilia Green.
The River Ardeche, which runs through the department of the same name is a beautiful crystal clear mountain water running along volcanic rock.
Many holidaymakers from all over Europe come to the Ardeche for walking and in particular canoeing along the winding passes,
which are not only renowned for their beauty, but can be most exhilarating through rapid sections of the river.
It is not uncommon for a small group to set off with canoes and travel along the river, camping overnight and continue the next day, to be picked up by a minibus at the end of their journey.
The River Ardeche can become quite ferocious at certain parts of the year, and flash floods can cause the water level to raise twenty feet or more in just a matter of minutes, as all the water drains off the mountains.
